Abstract

Since 2017 the research initiative is being undertaken on the geographical faculty of Moscow State University to create geoinformation and cartography support for state value and functioning of the transport system in Russia. The railway and highway network, as well as the functionally related network of transport hubs, is the main structure of the transport system in any region. Study of the content aspects of land routes and determine the necessary characteristics for their GIS presentation is one of the main tasks of the project. The article deals with the issues related to the selection and classification of information, the choice of indicators for showing railways and highways that meet the selection criteria, in the created spatial database.

Scenarios for the transport development of the territory require the inclusion of reliable and up-to-date data on transport facilities. In the course of the work, the range of sources and the optimal number of indicators characterizing land routes were identified, which were grouped into thematic blocks for the database formation. The analysis and assessment of the conditions under which the detailed information is collected for presentation at 3 levels of the scale image is analyzed. Due to the need of presenting information on several scale levels, several data sets have been formed, the qualitative and quantitative composition of which is unique, depending on the scale level for which these data are intended.

Collecting and formalizing of the initial thematic spatial information allowed to accumulate the necessary experience and to form the basic principles for the development of a database integrating not only road and rail, but also all other modes of transport. The main goal is to provide the consumer with as much information as possible about the transport system in Russia.
