Abstract

The article presents the methodology and results of toponymic research conducted in the Pribaikalsky, Tarbagataisky and Severobaikalsky regions of the Republic of Buryatia. Toponymic studies were carried out in the context of a comprehensive analysis of nature management as a system (nature, culture, history, economic activity). Information obtained by the authors during the winter and summer expeditions of the Department of Environmental Management, Faculty of Geography, Lomonosov Moscow State University to the Republic of Buryatia, as well as the analysis of the available sources on the toponymy of this region, made it possible to identify the features of geographical names in the studied territories. Based on the available materials, the original map was compiled on the basis of toponyms, both displayed on modern maps and preserved only in people’s memory. Toponyms acted as “markers” of the natural features of various regions, the boundaries of fishing grounds, objects of fishing, hunting and other activities, objects of natural and cultural heritage, places of settlements, etc. It is important that information about many of these sites is not recorded anywhere, except for toponymic names. In case the geographical names were given by people who did not have the written language for a long time, the process of fixing such places and objects on the maps becomes very important for understanding the history and development prospects of the territory, sometimes becoming the only original document. Toponymic research can form the basis for creating retrospective maps of nature management, maps of natural and cultural heritage, recreational maps, as well as the organization of ethnographic, ethno-ecological, environmental education, fishing, hunting, complex and other tours.
