Abstract

This article is devoted to the identification of patterns and features of the post-Soviet transformation of the settlement system of the Altai Republic. Population change is a fundamental resultant indicator that reflects a variety of socio-economic processes. However, these processes often remain unconscious and incomprehensible in terms of the specifics of their course and social consequences. The negative dynamics of the population of settlements demonstrates the crisis phenomena caused by the liquidation of industries and changes in management systems. The article analyzes the changes in the population of settlements of the Altai Republic that occurred in the post-Soviet period, spatial shifts in population density, key factors of ongoing transformational processes and existing trends. Based on a comparison of statistical data from the population censuses of 1989 and 2021, geoinformation analysis and in-depth interviews, conclusions are drawn regarding the patterns of spatial dynamics of the settlement system in the studied region. As part of the research, a geodata database was created, on the basis of which a series of thematic maps was created. The key revealed pattern is the demographic polarization of the Altai Republic in the post-Soviet period. Against the background of general population growth, it is redistributed into large settlements, while reducing the population in medium-sized settlements and in some cases abolishing small settlements that are located far from the main communications and settlement centers. This leads to the desolation of vast areas around such settlements. The developed series of maps allows you to visually assess the spatial patterns of transformation of the population of a network of settlements. Despite the positive dynamics of the population of the Altai Republic, spatial differences in population dynamics have a complex structure.
