Abstract

The existing structure of specially protected natural territories of the Republic of North Ossetia—Alania is considered. An option is proposed to improve the natural and ecological frame by creating a specially protected natural area in the form of a geopark in the east of the mountainous part of the republic and including wetlands valuable in environmental and scientific terms—the “Bekan” Reservoir and the Tarskoe peat bog in the frame structure. In the conditions of the tourism industry intensively developing in the Republic of North Ossetia—Alania, the geopark is the most suitable form of protected area. Unlike protected areas already operating on the territory of the Republic of North Ossetia—Alania, the geopark has less stringent restrictions on nature management. The security regime of the geopark is formed due to the presence of unique geological and geomorphological objects and processes and extends to objects of cultural and historical heritage located on the same territory. The paper uses materials obtained over a long period of complex geographical studies of the region. The current state of tourist nature management was studied directly in areas of greatest tourist interest. The ecological state of individual natural and cultural objects was revealed in the field. Cartographic work on the planned geopark was carried out using a single technology in the CorelDRAW, Photoshop and Surfer programs. The comparative approach was used to justify the optimization of the structure of protected areas and the improvement of the natural and ecological framework of the territory of the Republic of North Ossetia—Alania. The proposed structure of the natural-ecological framework increases the area of specially protected areas by almost ten percent, while simultaneously increasing the level of protection of natural and cultural-historical monuments and objects, and generally increasing the attractiveness of the Republic of North Ossetia—Alania.
